Our position on opening for visiting in care homes and supporting essential visiting
We recognise the complex and difficult circumstances that care homes in Scotland have been operating under during the Covid-19 pandemic, and we acknowledge and commend the continued commitment of care home providers and staff to care for people with compassion and dignity.
People must be able and supported to have meaningful contact with loved ones and, now that the vaccination programme in care homes is well underway, it is right that care homes open again to visitors. Some providers may have concerns about the opening of homes, but people’s rights and needs must be the focus of decision making.

Today we are pleased to announce the publication of Early Learning and Childcare: Our Role, Purpose and Learning during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This sets out we adapted our support and monitoring of Scotland’s ELC settings (including childminders and out of school care), during the pandemic. It includes real-life stories from providers across Scotland to highlight how we supported different settings as they continued to provide children with safe, engaging and stimulating care and learning experiences in difficult circumstances. It highlights strengths that have emerged despite the challenges and identifies a number of key learnings to take forward.
