NHS National Services have issued the following message about fire hazard presented by certain models of tumble drier. This may be relevant to care settings.

This information message is sent to draw the attention of Equipment Co-ordinators to information which may be relevant to the safety of equipment and environments in NHS Boards and Local Authorities.
- There has been significant press coverage in recent months regarding fires originating in tumble dryers and certain models are subject to a field corrective action plan. - It should be noted that all makes and models of tumble dryers should be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions to minimise the potential for a fire occurrence, particularly with regard to cleaning filters.
- NHSScotland fire safety advisors should be aware of this issue as part of the fire risk assessment process.
- Tumble driers are used in a range of health and social care settings for purposes including drying personal laundry and reusable slings.
