Tommy Whitelaw is a son, carer and campaigner to raise dementia awareness. Tommy recently spoke to our inspection team to talk about his experiences of caring for his mum Joan Whitelaw, who died last year after living with dementia for several years.
Tommy spoke about the difficulties he had getting the right services for his mum at the right time and how this led him to take his dementia awareness campaign "On Tour". He is now a project officer for Dementia Carers Voices, an organistion that reaches out to carers of people with dementia and gives them a voice through a "letters campaign".
We filmed his talk to staff. Watch this video to hear about what person-centred care means for people with dementia and their carers.
